Here are a dozen of my favorite recordings. These are from different times and places, some of which I have forgotten the details!
When My Dreamboat Comes Home
Old Waterloo has always been my favorite band. I don't remember when or where this was recorded, but it may have been at one of the Wimberly Jazz Festivals. Larmon Maddox and Barry Irwin both play some interesting solos on this track.
Amapola
One of my favorite tunes! For a couple of years, Tom Duplissey and I played for the Main Street Grill in Round Rock. We played outside, standing on the street corner. This was one of the tunes we played. I love the simplicity of this arrangement. It begins with a wonderful "floating" feel in the guitar. Then a modulation and a very simple swing ending.
While We Danced At The Mardi Gras
This tune features Tom Griffith on keyboard. Again, a very simple arrangement but nice and clean.
Bury Me On Basin Street
Han Aleghan and I recorded this in his studio in north Austin. Nothing fancy - just a nice melody that you do not hear very often.
Rosetta
This is another tune that Hans and I recorded in his studio. It's from a CD, "Private Stock", that we would sell at gigs.
How Come You Do Me Like You Do
I like this song's lyrics. They remind me of someone I know!
It Never Entered My Mind
A nice ballad that you do not hear too often.
My Romance
A few years ago there was a group called "Singers Unlimited" that would meet each Wednesday night at the Steak & Ale on Anderson Lane. Tom Griffith, Bob Alexius and I would play a few tunes and then each singer would come up and we would accompany them. Kind of like a karoke bar but with a live combo. It was great fun! Sadly the S&A went out of business and that was the end of it. We always played two or three warm up songs before bringing the singers up. This is one of them.
Petite Fleur
A very simple arrangement of Bechet's timeless tune.
Sugar
This is a slower version of Sugar. Most bands play it too fast for my taste. This is exactly the tempo and feel that I like for this tune.
I Want A Sunday Kind Of Love
Another ballad that I like to sing. Tom Griffith plays some awfully nice piano licks on this one.
You Took Advantage Of Me
Here Tom, Bob, and I are back at the Steak & Ale.
Well, that's it - an even dozen of my favorites. I hope you have enjoyed hearing them.
Jim
