Second Line Jazz Band To Play In Round Rock

Once upon a time fans of traditional Dixieland Jazz had a place they could go each week to hear their favorite music.  Each Sunday night the John Roberts Jazz Band would play at a spot in downtown Austin called the Capital Oyster Company.  Sadly the Capital Oyster Company and John Roberts are long gone!  There has not been a venue this side of San Antonio that featured true Dixieland Jazz since.  That changes on Thursday, June 17.  Dixieland Jazz fans will once again have the opportunity to hear their favorite tunes on a regular basis.

 Scott Bailey's Second Line Jazz Band will be appearing regularly on the third Thursday of each month in Round Rock at Star Coffee, 114 E. Main.  Now Star will feature Dixieland Jazz two nights each month.  On the first Thursday of each month Star sponsors the Tons Of Fun Jam Session where Dixieland musicians get together to perform.  The jams have been wildly popular, drawing many fans of all ages to a style of music that has all but disappeared from Central Texas. 

The Tons Of Fun Jam has been wildly popular, drawing near capacity crowds each month.  Musicians from all over Central Texas, and even out of state, show up each month to play Dixieland Jazz.  Fans have been asking for more and now the Second Line Jazz Band will furnish that.  Scott Bailey has been a regular performer at the jams.  Before his move to Georgetown, Scott's band was popular in San Antonio where they played a regular gig at a local restaurant.  It was a natural for him to reorganize his band and look for a place closer to home to perform.

Scott began talking with some local musicians and found them receptive to his idea of a regular gig.  He wanted a traditional instrumentatio slide trombone, cornet, clarinet and rhythm.  He has assembled an all star group that features Larmon Maddox on cornet, Jim Ivy on clarinet, Dave Bedrich on banjo, Budge Mabry on drums, and of course, Scott, himself, on slide trombone.  Scott felt that Williamson County was a better choice than Austin and Star Coffee seemed like the perfect place.  Star is already hosting the TOF jam on the first Thursday, it's easy to get to with none of the parking and access problems of most Austin venues.  There is a large contingent of folks who like Dixieland in Williamson County but don't want to fight the traffic in Austin to enjoy an evening of music.

So mark you calendar for the third Thursday of each month.  The jazz will start at 7:30 and go until 9:30.  All ages are welcome so bring the kids.  Star has excellent sandwichs, coffee, beer, and wine.  Plenty of parking! 

If the Second Line Jazz Band turns out to be as popular as the Tons Of Fun Jam, then Central Texas is well on it's way to having great Dixieland Jazz once again after all of these years!
