Next week will be a busy week for hot jazz fans. Of course the Tons Of Fun Jam will take place Thursday, Oct 7 at Star Co., 114 E. Main Avenue in Round Rock. Musicians from around Central Texas (and possibly elsewhere) will get together for what has become a tradition for jazz fans in the area. The jam begins at 7 pm and will go until 9 pm.
The following Friday, October 8, at 6 pm, Dave Bedrich’s group, The Swingsters, will be performing for the Round Rock Area Arts Council’s “Chalk Walk”. The Chalk Walk gets underway at 4 pm Friday and will feature live music, chalk art demonstrations, food and activities. It takes place on Main Avenue in Round Rock. The Swingster’s concert begins at 6 pm. They will be performing on the main stage on the Village Green next to the Arts Council's headquarters. You can't miss it.
Dave Bedrich leads the Swingsters from his drumset, Thomas Durnin, of KOOP fame, anchors the bass line, Tom Griffith shimmers on the keyboard, and I hold forth on sax and clarinet. The Swingsters perform an interesting mix of swing and traditional jazz and have become immensely popular, primarily in the more trendy eateries around South Austin. This will be a good opportunity for those of you who prefer your hot jazz in the cooler climes of Williamson County to hear the kind of music that made "America" and "Jazz" synonymous.
See you next week.
Jim
