When I was a teenager, the only thing I really was interested in was playing Dixieland jazz, (Of course, there were vague rumors of something called “sex” that offered interesting possibilities, but as far as I could tell that was only rumor and probably did not really exist in the real world). So I spent most of my waking hours in the basement listening to my Dad’s Dukes of Dixieland, Firehouse Five plus Two, Pee Wee Hunt, etc., etc. albums. My dream was to someday grow up and be like Pete Fountain. All I wanted to do was play Dixieland!
Well, that was a long time ago. It finally became apparent that when the Lord was passing out talent to folks like Pete Fountain, I was standing in the wrong line (possible due to some momentary curiosity about the aforementioned “sex” thing). But, be that as it may, over the years, I have had great fun making music and have been fortunate to get to play with some really great musicians.
The next few weeks are probably about as close as I will ever come to realizing my dream of being a full time Dixieland Jazz musician. Here are some events that I hope will be of interest to you. I certainly hope to see you at some of them.
Sunday, Oct. 29: (That will be “TODAY” by the time you read this) The Second Line Jazz Band plays for the Austin Traditional Jazz Club. 2 – 5 pm at the Cap City Comedy Club in Austin
Thursday, Nov. 3: The Tons Of Fun Jam Session. 7-9 pm at Star Coffee, 114 E. Main, Round Rock.
Friday, Nov. 4: The Second Line “Roarin’ 20’s” party at Adi’s, 119 W. 7th Street, Georgetown. There have been quite a few reservations so this looks like it will be a heck of a party!
Saturday, Nov. 12: The New Orleans Jazz Band of Austin makes a rare appearance to support trombonist Max Lyon’s fight against ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). The band will be playing somewhere along the 5K walk route at Mueller Lake Park (old Austin Airport site). Come out and support Max and hear some of the finest Dixieland musicians from Austin and San Antonio. Walk begins at 11:00 am.
Thursday, Nov. 17: The Second Line is back at our home base, Star Coffee in Round Rock. 7-9 pm.
Then it is time to enjoy your THANKSGIVING!!!
